National Education Policy 2020: Will it produce future entrepreneurs?

Entrepreneurship plays an important role in the industrial growth of any country or region. If we talk about India, the government has introduced various schemes like Make In India, Start-up India, and Skill India, which are intended to bring up more entrepreneurs but it is also important to understand that to promote entrepreneurship, children of the country have to be given necessary education that supports entrepreneurship skills. For the same reason, MHRD has come up with the National Education Policy. Apart from several other suggestions, NEP focuses on relevant changes to be bought up in all academic institutions in support of entrepreneurial learning.

How will National Education Policy help develop entrepreneurship?

Research And Innovation Based Learning

Till now, the education policies being followed in India promoted rote learning rather than practical and experiential learning. Little importance has been given to research and innovation. Under NEP, education will be more based on hands-on learning and gaining practical experience. Importance will be given to skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills, concepts, ideas, and applications. This will help in developing a risk-taking and entrepreneurial mindset in students.

Promoting multidisciplinary learning

Till now students have generally aimed for mainstream jobs like engineers and doctors or have been opting for other secure jobs. Under NEP, the horizon of subjects taught is broadened and equal emphasis is paid on subjects like arts and humanities, which will give a chance to the students to develop creative and artistic temperaments along with science. It will also lead to improved social and moral awareness among the youth. For example, a budding entrepreneur will not only know how to make a profit but also know the effect his business will have on the economy, society, and environment. It will help create a well-rounded individual. 

Paying emphasis on extracurriculars

Under NEP, subjects such as vocational skills and communication skills will be incorporated into the school curriculum. With vocational training making way into the curriculum, the younger generation will finally know how to think practically. Or to say, an electrical engineer will finally know how to fix a fan! Also, for being a successful entrepreneur, one of the main qualities required is good communication skills. With a different subject for communication skills, students will finally be able to put their ideas into words and also communicate them effectively.

Changes in the way of taking assessments

With the changes given by NEP, assessments will be taken keeping holistic development as the aim. Students will be tested for skills acquired and not on how much one has mugged up for the exam. The final degree will also have an academic bank of credit which will include academic credits earned by the students from different courses over the years.

Last Words: Will National Education Policy Change Anything

Implementing NEP still has a long way to go. It requires the right financing and implementation of rural as well as urban levels. If implemented properly, NEP will help youngsters come out of their routine based learning, and will help develop an innovative approach towards work and life. The Country will thus have a younger generation embedded with innovative thinking, aware of the skills required in the local market, and an ability to give potential output. It will help create opportunities, ensure social justice, and stimulate the economy.
